My Dragon Cat by Smirtouille My Dragon Cat by Smirtouille
That is a painting inspired of my Norwegian cat. I really think he's a dragon sometimes, I wanted to express that feeling in here by exaggerating the parts of his body I think have something to do with a mythical creature.
The style and color scheme was going around 19th century war paintings and portraits while the pose, exaggeration and pattern in the background are inspired from ancient Asian art.

Here is a picture of the model, awesome big, gentle, stupid and super gay Ungaro in his prime:…

Ungaro passed away a few months earlier this year. He had been sick for a long time. It was a difficult decision to make, especially for my mom. She couldn't come. I hold him until he was gone.
For a cat he was loyal, friendly and incredibly patient. He knew no fear and hold no apprehension for people. He occasionally got stuck in a neighbor's garage or their truck. He was a kind and loving animal, who kept the family together on a common ground of tenderness and affection. He's in peace now.

This is gorgeous! I desperately want these to be a real animal. It would probably be disastrous but still...
Beautiful work and beautiful cat. I'm sorry he passed away, but I know that's just what happens when you have animals as companions.

Oh.  I'm so sorry.  I had two (sisters) that lived 20 years.  It leaves a bitter emptiness that turns sweet over time.

Here he was in his prime:…
His passing was a relief for me. He had been very sick for at least a year and it was hard to convince my mom to help him go. Me I couldn't bear seeing him loosing his life force and dignity. He was a fantastic, kind, loyal and loving pet. I felt his very last heart beat.

wow!  He DOES look like a Dragon-Cat!

I have a female that looks like this type - we call it a "Maine Coon Cat".  Inherited her from my mother when she died.  She is much smaller than him, but similar tufts from the ears, like a lynx, long hair, similar markings, and a long tail like a boa.

there can be dignity with death no matter how death comes.  It's in the nature of the creature, not the circumstance.  Even a slow, painful death can be divided into parts and the end performed gracefully.  It is, I think, more difficult for the living to witness and accept than for the actor to perform.

In life, the brain has a way of protecting itself with pain - but, since that protection is meaningless in the face of death, the brain makes of it something else.

Daaw. :)
He was a Norwegian Forest cat. Those are slightly smaller in size than the Main Coon, they also have a more triangular head and a lighter jaw. Otherwise they are almost identical. I love how sociable and friendly they are!

And I agree. It's the life without dignity that is meaningless to me.
Sol-Caninus Featured By Owner Edited Dec 1, 2015   General Artist
Yeah.  She's pretty, but it's strictly look and don't touch, except for me.  She is not sociable.  She is easily annoyed and quite iracible - has no patience at all with other cats.  She bonds with only one other, which, as I've discovered, is a trait of the breed.

I read your note previously that he was a Norwegian Forest Cat.  I'd never heard of it.  Thanks for explaining.

BTW- a fellow deviant in Columbia :iconsaidestroyer: lost his cat suddenly to a heart attack, stroke or other event.  It's sad.  We always feel a sense of blame, as if we should have done something more.  But he now adopted a mother cat and her kitten.  Even when we've had enough, they still pick us from the crowd and manage to move in!

"super gay Ungaro" made me laugh really hard, not sure why - just sounds right (that's an awesome name!). But other than that, it's very out of place to laugh at this painting, that looks like a nasty bite! Anyways, I definitely saw the asian dragon part in his wispy ears, and I like how they seem to be floating on their own. Magical :)

Do you know of the mythical Pukis (or Pukys or Puk)? That's a tiny dragon from Eastern Europe that disguises itself as a cat by day and lives as somebody's pet. Then at night it turns into a tiny, flying, fiery dragon that flits around really fast. It goes out and steals little trinkets from people and brings them back to its owner. It also protects treasures that belong to its owner.

Smirtouille Featured By Owner Jul 19, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
No it's Norwegian forest cat.
GRAYSCALED Featured By Owner Jul 20, 2011  Professional Traditional Artist
Thank you for replying. I was just wondering because I have a maine coon and they look kind of similar.
I googled it and Wiki says that they're similar. I was starting to feel silly.

The drawing is amazing - I, especially, like the tufts of fur in his ears and collar and the exagerrated teeth.
Smirtouille Featured By Owner Jul 20, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Yes they are similar. : ) Norwegians are a bit smaller and more triangular, a little more elegant than the Coons, and the Coons are more massive with a big chin. They're all beautiful and friendly animals.
